Chuck Close was born on July 5th, 1940 in Monroe, Washington. His full name is Charles Thomas “Chuck” Close. Chuck paints incredibly photo-realistic larger than life paintings of himself, friends, and celebrities. Even after a spinal failure in 1988, he continued to paint just as passionatly.
Chuck attended college at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1962, where he received his B.A. He continued his education at Yale University, receiving his MFA in 1964. He lived in Europe for a while, but returned to America to teach art.
Chuck got his first show in 1970, and was instantly liked. His unique style and technique really turned out some crazy paintings.
After his accident, Close's paintings became a much more tedious undertaking. He has to rig up his hand in a holster and paint one stroke at a time, very slowly. To me, its amazing that he continued painting.
Chuck Close is definitly an example of an artist who wouldn't let anything stop his art. His body of work is fantastic and respectable. His paintings look like an actual picture. To me, Chuck Close is the best artist that we went over in this class.
