Jasper Johns is an American artist who became much more famous than I think he really deserved. His work consisted of many targets, circles, and American flags painted over in weird patterns. I don't like his art, but I don't necessarily dislike it either.
To me, his art was just the re purposing of pre-existing pieces of art. I'm not debating that Johns was any more or less of an artist because of it; I just don't relate to any of his art. And after all, that is really what an individual's opinion on art is based on- his or her ability to relate their life to the work.
Johns parents divorced when he was a kid. After that, he went to live with his grandparents. He claims to have been driven to draw since the age of three. Jasper johns went to the University of South Carolina for a little while, but eventually he went to a the Parsons School of design in 1949, as well as serving in the army.
While watching the video, i couldn't help but imagine Johns as a small weakly child. He just seemed so timid and delicate about everything, from the way he sat and talked to the way he set up his exhibits. While i didn't care much for his art, I did find his personality to be quite interesting. The video did a really good job of portraying an artist in his natural habitat, as awkward as it was sometimes.
